Humane assessment: taming the elephant from the development room

Tudor Gîrba, Dr., Innovation Lead, CompuGroup Medical Schweiz

«Technical debt» is a successful metaphor that exposes software engineers to economics, and managers to a significant technical problem. It provides a language that both engineers («technical») and managers («debt») understand.

But, «technical debt» is just a metaphor that has its limitations, too. The most important limitation is that it presents a negative proposition: The best thing that can happen to you is having no technical debt.

Technical debt is both brought about and solved as a result of decisions. As such, we turn our attention to how people reach decisions about a software system. Decision making is a critical software engineering activity. Developers alone spend some half of their time reading code. This means half of the development budget. Even though it is the single most significant development activity, nobody really talks about how this effort is being spent.

It’s time to change this. The talk motivates the need for software assessment as an explicit discipline, it introduces the humane assessment method and outlines the implications.

The ideas presented are exemplified through case studies carried out with the Moose analysis platform (http://moosetechnology.org). More information about humane assessment can be found here: http://humane-assessment.com

Erfahrungsbericht aus der Reisebranche

Benno Iten, Divisional CIO, Kuoni Travel Gruppe

Tools support to manage the Technical Debt

Alexander von Zitzewitz, CEO at hello2morrow Inc.

Sonargraph-Quality includes all the features of Sonargraph-Architect and adds many features that will help you to analyze, manage and assess the overall technical quality of a software system. Sonargraph-Quality uses a persistent repository to store all the information gained from analyzing your system. While it supports direct parsing you would usually do all the heavy-duty parsing and analysis during your nightly build. The result of such an analysis is a snapshot of your system. The snapshot contains a complete model of your code base including structural information, metrics and other data. Since Sonargraph will create many snaphots over time it is easy to compare different snapshots with each other.

Managing Technical Debt across the Enterprise

Kai Schwidder, Business Unit Manager, Zühlke Engineering AG

Enterprises have raised their level of technical debt significantly over the past. Root causes, impediments, impacts and the necessity to change are illustrated and explained according to a recent finance industry case. Managing the “change” is of high importance while being able to apply agile principles to maintain technical debt through the full-life-cycle. Especially the maintenance aspects are illustrated to provide an approach which balances the business expectations and the reduction of the debt too.

Technische Investitionen statt technischer Schulden!
